Nunsense by Dan Goggin

November 2-3, 9-10, 16-17, 2001

~Press Release~

When is a nun not a nun?

When is a nun not a nun? When's she's a priest! Throughout the history of Dan Goggin's Nunsense, a priest has never played the part of one of the nuns, but The Chevy Chase Players are changing that with their production of the play in November. Madge Gerbracht-Stagnaro, cast in the role as the streetwise tough Sister Robert Anne, is an Episcopal priest in real life. She received a note from the playwright telling her that he has never had a priest play one of his nuns.

Nunsense, a musical-comedy, is the story of the Little Sisters of Hoboken who are trying to raise money to bury four of their recently departed sisters. Mr. Goggin writes, "I wrote Nunsense because I wanted to share what I knew to be "the humor of the nun." He certainly accomplishes this with the lyrics in such songs as "Nunsense is Habit-Forming," "The Biggest Ain't the Best," "We've Got to Clean Out the Freezer," and "Holier Than Thou."

The Cast: Marsh Coder, Brenda Shaw, Mother Superior, a Sophia Tucker-type, played by Joy Cecilly Gerst, tries to keep the other nuns in focus as they perform in this fundraiser but Sr. Mary Hubert, played by Ellyn Lomack Crawford, continues to be in competition with her. Marsha Coder plays Sr. Mary Amnesia, a nun who lost her memory after a crucifix fell on her head and Brenda Shaw, as Sr. Mary Leo, tries to convince the Mother Superior that she can become the first nun ballerina.

After the events of September 11, the cast of Nunsense wanted to somehow contribute. Since the premise of the play is a fundraiser for the convent, there will be collection baskets throughout the auditorium with all monies collected to go to the Red Cross.

Through song, dance, and every Catholic joke we have ever heard (and some new ones), the Chevy Chase Players have a winner on their hands.
